A Second branch home has scores of details designed and built-in to minimize fuel and electrical use. Some of the major features are illustrated in the drawing on the right. But many, many details can only be appreciated by seeing the panels and modules built in the PBS factory in Claremont, NH. The result is a home that is fully compliant with the thermal bypass inspection list and that meets or exceeds RBES, Energy Star and NAHB Green standards.
The wall construction is a composite of 2x4 studs with cellulose insulation and a continuous exterior layer of 1 1/2" polystyrene, resulting in a "whole wall" R factor of 21 at an efficiency of 95%. The home uses one fuel – LP gas, for heat, hot water, range and clothes dryer. This not only saves electricity, but also helps the Association bargain for a better fuel price.
The house is also equipped with argon filled, low E insulating glass, Energy Star appliances and lighting, and a Panasonic Whisper Green programmable bathroom fan that keeps the bath free of mold and supplies air changes for the entire home.
